Fenway and Hattie (2025)

Fenway

Our school is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event. Every family will receive a copy of the same book and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks.  Making the time to participate in this special activity with your child will help to make this a great experience.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff – will all be following along together.

Your child will receive a copy of our book at a special schoolwide assembly introducing the program and the book. Along with the book, there will be a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. The chapters have also been recorded by our teachers, so that students can listen along and we can support busy lives!  We also have older students who have volunteered to be readers at first recess with our younger crew!  Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night, so it fits into classroom nightly reading time.  We look forward to some trivia fun, buddy reading, great classroom discussion and fun activities that go along with the book!

The book we have chosen this year is Fenway and Hattie and it is sure to make you giggle!  A little review of the books shares:

It sure is hard to be a dog.  If only his Humans knew the struggle. Phew!   Fenway and Hattie is the story of a dog and his Humans, their understandings and misunderstandings. It is a charming tale of true dedication and friendship. Fenway and his favorite Short Human, Hattie, find a way to better relate to each other. Victoria J. Coe keeps young readers interested and engaged by telling the story in the first person, from Fenway’s perspective. We see the world – the backyard, the old house, the new house, the neighborhood, even elevators – through Fenway’s ears and eyes and, especially, nose. Families will roar with laughter at Fenway’s escapades and learning experiences. Fenway will inspire all Short Humans to stand up for what they believe, become a truly dedicated friend, and remember to always enjoy snack time eyes.

When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about!  We are excite to build a Community of Readers together at St. Mary’s

Our Good Works Project is in support of Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation.  They are accepting dry dog food (they recommend Costco as it is the least expensive for the quality).  They are also accepting Gift Cards from Costco or Pet Valu.  In addition, they would be grateful for donations of paper towel, garbage bags and cleaning supplies such as Mr. Clean.  Thank You!!

Meet THE PERFORMERS with Tomlin Trick Dogs

DIXIELAND is our main entertainer. She is a delightful little Rat Terrier, lively and acrobatic, she enjoys jumping through hula hoops and rolling on a barrel and getting the treats afterwards!

POPCORN is a young Miniature Rat Terrier, who usually has a lot to say as she spins in circles or races through a tunnel or practices her Handstand.

DEVON is a Border Collie Mix, who came to us as a Rescue at 2 years old. She loves to tidy up her toys, keep the dishes stacked neatly, and is currently learning to mail a letter in the old style rural mail box.

Our latest addition is SKY, a precocious Border Collie. Like many youngsters, she is learning to Skateboard, and is keen to acquire more skills.

ZIPADEE, a Parson Russell Terrier, sometimes puts in a guest appearance for Petting Time after the show.
