One School, One Book

St. Mary's School is a Literacy School

Since 2015 St. Mary's School has been running One School One Book projects to celebrate literacy. Every other year we run a school-wide reading project where we have all read the same book, with the goal of building a reading community, in a program called One School, One Book.  Our Parent Council generously fundraises and purchases our books - one for each child in the school.  Then for the month of January students follow a reading schedule and read the book at home.  We gather together in small groups to share and discuss what we read.  Click on the links to the side for updates, activities and photos. In January 2015 St. Mary's School embarked on our first month long, school-wide book study.  The program was designed to create a shared reading experience within our school community. Every student and staff member received a copy of the book The Lemonade Wars at our opening assembly.  A schedule was set up and every family read the book at home over the month.  At school we will had weekly activities and celebrations. We ended up having such a great time talking and celebrating literacy (not to mention we had so many rave reviews from teachers and parents)!  We are looking forward to continuing this novel approach to enriching our reading experience and promoting shared literacy within our school community every year!
